Reason2Stay
Gratitude can be a protective factor against depression.
Reason2Stay is a student-led mental health initiative at Niles North High School dedicated to raising awareness about the role gratitude can play in supporting mental well-being and helping protect against depression. Through your support, we provide mental health care packages to students in our community who are facing depression and other mental health challenges.

The science of gratitude
How gratitude protects against depression.
Decades of psychology research point to a consistent pattern: people who regularly practice gratitude report fewer depressive symptoms — and the effect shows up across age groups, including teens.
Rewires attention
Gratitude shifts the brain's focus away from rumination — the loop of negative thinking that fuels depression — toward what is supportive and meaningful.
Buffers against stress
Studies link a grateful mindset to lower cortisol, lower perceived stress, and a stronger sense of hope when life gets hard.
Improves sleep & mood
Writing down a few things you're thankful for before bed is linked to better sleep quality — a known protective factor for adolescent mental health.
Strengthens connection
Expressing gratitude deepens relationships and social support, the single biggest protective factor against teen depression.

"Gratitude is more than a feel-good emotion — research suggests it acts as a protective factor, helping people interpret their lives in ways that build resilience against depression and anxiety."
